11 PLUS

We teach the following subjects at 11+ level:
  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

A test will be conducted, after entrance into the tuition, which will enable us to place your child in the set that will work best for them. These sets include:

  • Foundation
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

  1. GL/NFER Maths tests
  2. CEM Numerical reasoning maths tests.
  3. Grammar school written maths tests.
  4. Independent school written maths tests.
Children who begin developing their core skills in Years 3-4 are proven to do better on their 11 plus exams. We recommend getting a head start first and then advancing their knowledge in year 5 to the highest standard.
  1. GL
  2. CEM
  3. Grammar School
  4. Independent School
Papers are usually 50 minutes and contain these sections:

11 Plus English Exam – Comprehension test
Text of around 500/750 words. These texts can vary between a classic texts (such as Charles Dickens) or a more factual text like a an article or news report. Children will be asked questions on the text.

11 Plus English Exam – Vocabulary testing
Children may be asked the meaning of different words in a text. There may be a synonyms/antonyms task, or a CLOZE passage exercise to do (fill in the blanks or select the appropriate word).

11 Plus English Exam – Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar
Children will often find a section of different questions on SPaG. For example, correcting mistakes in a passage.

11 Plus English Exam – Literary Devices
Some tests may examine a child’s knowledge of literary devices and ask them to identify or write examples of devices like Similes, Metaphors or Personification.

11 Plus English Exam – Literacy reasoning
Some 11 Plus tests do not have specific Verbal Reasoning sections and so have literacy reasoning questions instead. This could be on: rhyming words, anagrams, crosswords, odd words out, putting jumbled words into sentences, putting jumbled sentences or paragraphs into the correct order.

11 Plus English Exam – Creative writing
Questions will often be multiple choice. Some areas use a Creative Writing exercise, such as completing the comprehension text or write about a prompt. This may vary based on school, so it is important to check first.

In Independent School 11 Plus tests, Creative Writing is almost always included.
  • GL (NFER)
  • CEM
The GL 11 Plus exam focusses on  the 21 different verbal reasoning question types (plus variants). Question types are similar year to year (although not every type will appear in every paper).7

The CEM 11 Plus Verbal Reasoning exam is a mix between a normal English exam and traditional Verbal Reasoning test:

  • Vocabulary questions (antonyms and synonyms) similar to GL questions on these topics.
  • Often have two comprehension sections (similar to most English 11 Plus papers).
  • Often have CLOZE passage questions (with missing words or parts of words missing)
  • Sometimes have shuffled sentences (sentences with the word order altered, the task is to order the words correctly or find the word that does not belong in the sentence).
  • Sometimes have grammar and punctuation questions (similar to those in English papers).

  • GL
  • CEM
  • Independent Schools
Non-Verbal Reasoning tests a logic and observational skills with questions on shapes and patterns. Questions are type-based. For example, they may need to find the odd one out, or two shapes that are most similar to each other or complete the next in a sequence of shapes. The best type of preparation is practice.
